Development of Academics and Higher Education FuturesThe Council of Australian Directors of Academic Development (CADAD) successfully applied to the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (formerly the Carrick Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education Ltd) for support of a project entitled “The Development of Academics and Higher Education Futures”. The project was designed to evaluate how universities organise for academic development and the strategies employed to develop academics in the light of current and emerging challenges for higher education in Australia. The project is now completed and the final report is available below: Foundations of University TeachingThe Foundations of Univesity Teaching website has helped establish a growing network for those who develop and organise institutional Foundations programs. In addition a Community of Practice has met annnually for a series of colloquia on this subject since 2003. Further information, including archives of past Foundations colloquia can be found on the Foundations of Univesity Teaching website. The ALTC Preparing Academics to Teach in Higher Education (PATHE) project was developed from the Foundations colloquia. Please see below for more information. GCTE: A national Graduate Certificate in Tertiary EducationThe vision of this ALTC funded project was to devise a means of delivering the best possible Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Education for new academic staff, creating viable cohorts, and increasing the number of students in each aspect of the program, through a collaborative GCTE offering across five universities. This aimed to create a vibrant cross-institutional community where the course was shared, and efficiencies made the course viable. The project has now concluded and the following resources are available for further information: National Teaching Quality Indicators Project (2007-2009)Rewarding and recognising quality teaching in higher education through systematic implementation of indicators and metrics on teaching and teacher effectiveness Website: http://www.catl.uwa.edu.au/projects/tqiThe Teaching Quality Indicators project responds to the need for an agreed approach to recognising and rewarding quality teaching and teachers in higher education. RED:: Recognition - Enhancement - DevelopmentThe contribution of sessional teachers to higher education RED was funded by the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (formerly the Carrick Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education Ltd) This large-scale study into the recognition, enhancement and development of sessional teaching in higher education builds on the Australian Universities Teaching Committee Report (2003a) Training, Support and Management of Sessional Teaching Staff. The aim of RED was to identify and analyse current national practice and refocus attention on the issues surrounding sessional teachers in the university sector. The project is now completed and the following resources are available: Strategic Leadership for Institutional Teaching and Learning Centres: Developing a Model for the 21st CenturyThis ALTC funded project set out to identify common factors to be considered in the effective strategic leadership of central organisational structures to enhance long-term learning and teaching performance and to highlight how these factors are being dealt with contextually in a selection of contemporary university settings in Australian higher education. A strong assumption of this project was that strategic leadership is a major expectation of contemporary teaching and learning centres and that the search for strategic leadership in response to institutional expectations and external forces was leading to significant repositioning of centres across the sector. What's happening in assessment? When the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) started operations in 2005, academic standards, assessment practices and reporting were among the ALTC‘s designated responsibilities and priorities as determined by the ALTC Board. Over the years, the number of projects and fellowship programs focusing on assessment has grown substantially and this remains one of the priority areas which attracts a significant number of applications with each new funding round. These reports provide a brief background of each project and fellowship focusing on assessment, its outcomes or progress to date, the lead institution and the project leader. In November 2008, the ALTC counted up to 50 funded projects and fellowships related to assessment. The 2008 What’s happening in assessment? report included seven fully completed projects and fellowships. A further nine have been funded this year, and a substantial number of projects and fellowships have been completed. From the 59 projects and fellowships outlined in this report, 25 are completed to date. |
